MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Grade 6

Bible 6 focuses on the study of foundational truths of the Christian faith. Through the study of the fundamental doctrines of the faith, students are encouraged to develop good, personal decision-making skills.

English 6 emphasizes the eight parts of speech, verb forms, subject and verb agreement, and proper word usage. Spelling rules and reading comprehension are reinforced through the literature. Creative writing is used to encourage more original thinking and a historical research paper to improve organized writing skills.

Math 6 uses the Saxon textbooks which are distinguished by their unique instructional approach and rich content. Saxon emphasizes incremental development and continual cumulative review. In Math 76, the lessons encompass the content of arithmetic; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers, decimal fractions, and common fractions. However, the lessons go beyond the topics of arithmetic to include foundational topics of geometry, measurement, algebra, number, scale and graph reading. Word problems include items from history, and science as well as from the realm of imagination.

Science 6 provides a Biblical perspective of science in general. Each aspect of the text is taught in the light of the truths of Genesis 1 and the Bible as a whole. The sixth grade takes a close look at the earth itself which includes the study of rock formations, volcanoes, earthquakes, metal, fuels, and caves. They also will look at the handiwork of God in the skies above. A study of stars, planets, constellations, and light prepare the students for a section of space travel. Sixth grade science brings a study of plants, their functions, and designs, as well as a first hand look at leaf collection and a tree’s parts. Every student will also explore the world of vertebrates and invertebrates.

History 6 focuses on the study North and South America. Students will examine the terrain, flora, and history of the areas. They will make a relief map. They will work with maps of rivers, mountains, deserts, lakes, seas, and islands of the world.

Physical Education 6 focuses on physical fitness. Students are required to purchase and to dress in approved physical education uniforms.

Choir 6 is part of the elementary choir that sings for the TACS Competition.

Grade 7

Bible 7 focuses on a Biblical truths and practical applications to everyday living.

English 7 emphasizes dictionary and spelling skills, vocabulary building, understanding sentences, parts of speech, subject and verb agreement, capitalization, reading skills, and basic writing techniques.

Math 7 provides a systematic analysis of important mathematical topics from number operations and measurement to basic geometry and algebra. The course offers students the chance to explore new uses of their math skills.

Life Science 7 presents a study of organisms in relation to their environment with special emphasis on the comparison of single-cell and complex organisms. Hands-on lab experiences are utilized to teach basic concepts.

History 7 surveys the United State’s people, places, and events from the pioneers to the present.

Physical Education 7/8 focuses upon physical fitness.

Keyboarding 7/8 focuses on essential keyboarding skills, speed, and accuracy development, and the skills needed to produce quality research papers.

Chorus 7/8 is the vocal music group for middle school students. This class may be substituted for study hall.

Study Hall is a period of supervised study and library research during the school day.

Grade 8

Bible 8 focuses on Biblical truths and practical application into Christian living.

English 8 emphasizes basic grammar, beginning composition, remedial and developmental reading skills, and spelling and vocabulary development.

Math/Pre-Algebra 8 is designed to help students in making the transition from elementary math to algebra. Previous skills, concepts, and problem-solving processes are strengthened.

Algebra I is the first-year algebra course for students who have completed Pre-Algebra in the seventh grade, and have been recommended to take the course from teacher evaluation and an algebra readiness test. (Students earn a unit of high school credit in this course.)

Earth Science 8 is a practical study of the earth (its features, its forces, and its place in the universe) offering a relevant introduction to the matter and processes of the earth.

American History 8 provides a chronological study of America and its people from the exploratory period to the present, including a special study of the Constitution, and culminating in a trip to Washington, D.C. in the spring.
